~ Idea 2553 ~
We have statistics and surveys on almost any conceivable subject on Earth except one which is fundamental: happiness.

There is need for a whole education, science, inquiries and surveys of happiness.

As a first step the UN could inquire what definition of happiness each nation, each culture has, since the pursuit of happiness is or should be the main purpose of government. And we should ask religions to do the same: What were the messages of their founders, the messengers from the universe, Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, the Great Spirit of the indigenous people?

Remarkable Conversations With Our Elders
by Kathy Ward

How does happiness relate to health?

A group of elders and I gathered to talk about happiness, feelings of contentment and health.
...The most important part of a tree is not the trunk, but the root. One has to nurture the root more than any other part, because once the root becomes weak, the rest of the tree will get ill, weak and eventually will die. If we compare the trunk with our body, the branches represent the organs, the leaves, flowers and fruits represent the mind, creativity our dreams, and the root our soul and deepest heart desires. The roots are the spirit within and when we don't nurture and take care of our spirit, we get weak physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Regardless our present age, the root needs to be maintain, care for and nurture daily for the rest of us to function, progress and live a better quality of life.

So, how we nurture our spirits?

Elizabeth, 87: With a sense of humor, it is the spice of life and a life saver.

Faith, 91: I pray and then I take a walk. When I pray I feel better and more relax. I then take a walk to set my thoughts free, otherwise when I keep thinking about what makes me sad, or worry, the issues seems to get bigger and nothing else matters. I do not like that so I take a walk.

Pat, 82: I nurture my spirit making other people happy. However, happiness and a feeling of contentment are two different things but we need to get out of ourselves and focus on the many things we can do for others, and the more we do, the more content we will be.

Roger, 80: I think that first we need to realize that life dishes out challenges to us all. How we deal with those challenges determines our state of mind. Learning to focus on a solution, rather than on the problem, forces us to have a more positive attitude.

Kathy 39: Another aspect of maintaining a feeling of well-being is activity. When our minds are focused elsewhere, we alleviate the stress and tension caused by focusing only on our problems. Any meaningful activity you enjoy, whether it be reading, listening to music, gardening, walking your dog, baking apple pies for the homeless or a dear friend, talking nature walks, organizing community service projects, meditating or simply chatting with a family member or a friend, can give you a mental and physical boost.

Valerye 94: We need to understand that happiness is a choice. We can create our own happiness and that it is foolish not to make yourself happy.

Danny 62: I work as a volunteer in the White House. The other day, a man came to see the Christmas decorations and I was assigned as the docent to guide a group of people. He came along with us but was not having a very good disposition and most of his remarks where very unpleasant. I did not responded to any of his provocations. As the man was leaving the White House I said to him; "thank you so much for coming, it was very nice having you with us, have a great day." The man turned and looking at his wife and said to her "what's wrong with this man, is he trying to make me happy?" Danny continues... when I work and volunteer my time to help others I decide to be happy and make others happy being kind, patient and joyful. I do not let rain ruin my parade.

Kathy: As we continue to explore the mind-body connection, we are beginning to see how tension caused by everyday worries and concerns can block the flow of good energy that keeps us well. Then
"Life Force Energy" is disrupted or weekend and emotional or health problems tend to occur. Imbalances can be caused from many situations occurring in our lives, such as: emotional or physical trauma, injury, negative thoughts and feelings, including fear, worry, doubt, anger, anxiety, negative self-talk, toxicity, nutritional depletion, destructive lifestyles and unhealthy relationships, neglect of self and lack of love for oneself or others, from emotions that are not expressed in a healthy way... The practice of happiness brings us vigor, good energy and a disposition towards life and as love, they help us to open doors, see possibilities and embrace opportunities to better our lives and the lives of others.

Let's start the new year with a "Hunting for Happiness Campaign" What ideas come to mind to bring good energy, happiness and love into our lives?

Valerye: Wear more happy colors, a very important thing when we dress. Remember to wear a smile on your face. It is charming and makes you popular.

Roger: Let's vote for the happiest person in our community. Someone that shows good disposition, practice kindness, and possesses a good sense of humor.

Pat: All of us could put together a scrap book of 'the happiest moments in our lives' and share it with everyone else.

Danny: Let's read a good book.

Kathy: Great idea Danny! I have brought you a wonderful book and I would like to read a couple of pages of it about Happiness, written by Robert Muller, "Most of All They Taught Me Happiness" ... Page 177, about "What Each One Of Us Is Doing For Peace? We always rely on others to work for PEACE, justice and a better world but what are we doing, each one of us?

Happiness dispels unhappiness as light dispels obscurity.

Therefore, switch on the happiest currents you can find in yourself.

First you have to believe in happiness and then you will find it. It is first and foremost a question of faith.

Robert's Golden Sayings
How many heads of state know the meaning of the name of their country and capital? Many soldiers are ready to kill and to be killed for a name whose meaning they do not even know.
*
In the United States I lived in Dobbs Ferry (there was a ferry run by a man named Dobbs during the last century) in the Hudson Valley (after the explorer Hudson; but formerly called by the Indians Mahicannituck, the great waters in constant motion), near New York (the new English York in the new world). In France I lived in St. Gix (Holy water, from the Celtic word gix, water), on the chemin de la Vie de L traz (the via strada of Julius Caesar), near Divonne (the Divine Waters of the Romans). I felt good to know that. I love to know the history of the places where I live. It enriches me.
*
More recent names of countries, such as the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, are not natural, poetic names. The political objective shows in them. What sad, poor names they are compared with names of virtues or nature. Furthermore they want to unite what is below, not what is above. Why not a United World or a World Union instead of states and republics?

Ending War

INTRODUCTION (Ideas 501 to 600)
A Declaration of Interdependence*

*This Declaration was promulgated on 24 October 1975, United Nations Day, by the Philadelphia World Affairs Council in Independence Hall, Philadelphia, in the presence of the UN Secretary General and all heads of the UN specialized agencies.

WHEN IN THE COURSE OF HISTORY the threat of extinction confronts humankind, it is necessary for the people of The United States to declare their interdependence with the people of all nations and to embrace those principles and build those institutions which will enable humankind to survive and civilization to flourish.

Two centuries ago our forefathers brought forth a new nation: now we must join with others to bring forth a new world order. On this historic occasion it is proper that the American people should reaffirm those principles on which the United States of America was founded, acknowledge the new crises which confront them, accept the new obligations which history imposes upon them, and set forth the causes which impel them to affirm before all peoples their commitment to a Declaration of Interdependence.

We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all human are created equal: that the inequalities and injustices which afflict so much of the human race are the product of history and society, not of God or nature, that people everywhere are entitled to the blessings of life and liberty, peace and security and the realization of their full potential: that they have an inescapable moral obligation to preserve those rights for posterity: and that to achieve these ends all the peoples and nations of the globe should acknowledge their interdependence and join together to dedicate their minds and their hearts to the solution of those problems which threaten their survival.

To establish a new world order of compassion, peace, justice and security, it is essential that humankind free itself from the limitations of national prejudice, and acknowledge that the forces that unite it are incomparably deeper than those that divide it – that all people are part of one global community, dependent on one body of resources, bound together by the ties of a common humanity and associated in a common adventure on the planet Earth.

*This Declaration was promulgated on 24 October 1975, United Nations Day, by the Philadelphia World Affairs Council in Independence Hall, Philadelphia, in the presence of the UN Secretary General and all heads of the UN specialized agencies.

Let us then join together to vindicate and realize this great truth that humankind is one, and as one will nobly save or irreparably lose the heritage of thousands of years of civilization. And let us set forth the principles which should animate and inspire us if our civilization is to survive.

WE AFFIRM that the resources of the globe are finite, not infinite, that they are the heritage of no one nation or generation, but of all peoples, nations and of posterity, and that our deepest obligation is to transmit to that posterity a planet richer in material bounty, in beauty and in delight than we found it. Narrow notions of national sovereignty must not be permitted to curtail that obligation.

WE AFFIRM that the exploitation of the poor by the rich, and the weak by the strong violates our common humanity and denies to large segments of society the blessings of life, liberty and happiness. We recognize a moral obligation to strive for a more prudent and more equitable sharing of the resources of the earth in order to ameliorate poverty, hunger and disease.

WE AFFIRM that the resources of nature are sufficient to nourish and sustain all the present inhabitants of the globe and that there is an obligation on every society to distribute those resources equitably, along with corollary obligation upon every society to assure that its population does not place upon Nature a burden heavier than it can bear.

WE AFFIRM our responsibility to help create conditions which will make for peace and security and to build more effective machinery for keeping peace among the nations. Because the insensate accumulation of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons threatens the survival of humankind we call for the immediate reduction and eventual elimination of these weapons under international supervision. We deplore the reliance on force to settle disputes between nation states and between rival groups within such states.

WE AFFIRM that the oceans are the common property of humankind whose dependence on their incomparable resources of nourishment and strength will, in the next century become crucial for human survival, and that their exploitation should be so regulated as to serve the interests of the entire globe, and of future generations.

WE AFFIRM that pollution flows with the waters and flies with the winds, that it recognizes no boundary lines and penetrates all defenses, that it works irreparable damage alike to Nature and to humankind – threatening with extinction the life of the seas, the flora and the fauna of the earth, the health of the people in cities and the countryside alike – and that it can be adequately controlled only through international cooperation.

WE AFFIRM that the exploration and utilization of outer space is a matter equally important to all the nations of the globe and that no nation can be permitted to exploit or develop the potentialities of the planetary system exclusively for its own benefit.

WE AFFIRM that the economy of all nations is a seamless web, and that no one nation can any longer effectively maintain its processes of production and monetary systems without recognizing the necessity for collaborative regulation by international authorities.

WE AFFIRM that the civilized society, the institutions of science and the arts are never at war and call upon all nations to exempt these institutions from the claims of chauvinistic nationalism and to foster that great community of learning and creativity whose benign function it is to advance civilization and the health and happiness of humankind.

WE AFFIRM that a world without law is a world without order, and we call upon all nations to strengthen and to sustain the United Nations and its specialized agencies, and other institutions of world order, and to broaden the jurisdiction of the World Court, that these may preside over a reign of law that will not only end wars but end as well that mindless violence which terrorizes our society even in times of peace.

WE can no longer afford to make little plans, allow ourselves to be the captives of events and forces over which we have no control, consult our fears rather than our hopes. We call upon the American people, on the threshold of the third century of their national existence, to display once again that boldness, enterprise, magnanimity and vision which enabled the founders of our Republic to bring forth a new nation and inaugurate a new era in human history. The fate of humanity hangs in the balance. Throughout the globe, hearts and hopes wait upon us. We summon all humankind to untie to meet the great challenge.

Idea Dreams 6001-6500

~ Idea 6012 ~

I recommend to UNESCO and to Mrs. Bruntland, the head of the World Health Organization, to plan a World Conference on Death, not only human deaths, but the deaths of all species. Regarding humans, there would be a large number of subjects, for example the number of deaths each year in the world and by countries, the longevity, mortality and the disposal practices of countries burying or burning the bodies, etc. For example, in 2000 50.5 million persons died in the world, 1.2 million died for lack of water.

Robert's Golden Sayings
We have at least come to the point when most people no longer want war. Conflict, violence and wars are becoming immoral, despicable and out of fashion. No glory derives from them anymore. But there are still very powerful people who no longer want war but who do not want peace either, because it would cause them prejudice. They might even provoke conflicts to prove that peace is against human nature. Some businessmen, the military and fanatic ideologists are in this category.

Peace

~ Idea 411 ~ 25 August 1995

The world would be better off if instead of reading, hearing and watching bad news, horror stories and lots of violence served by so many newspapers, radio and TV stations, the children and people would hear and see programs of the United Nations and of their world agencies, educating them and enlisting them in the healing of the world and of humanity.

I propose the creation of a United Nations World Media Network to inform objectively and educate all world inhabitants, giving them hope and enlisting their help to achieve a better, happier world. The International Radio for Peace of the University for Peace is a great first example to follow.

Robert's Golden Sayings
My same fascination applies to the Hindu notion of Trikolonat: the one who is able to live on three planes - the plane of his internal life, of his daily life and of the life above, the heavenly, cosmic, angelic, spiritual life. This again is a cosmic characteristic of the human species: we can aggrandize ourselves from our internal and daily life to the totality of the universe, to the infinitely large. Again, this can apply to any group including humanity. Humanity has an internal life, a current life and a spiritual, cosmic life dimension. My participation in these lives aggrandizes my own personal life greatly.

The UN is a heroic organization: it tackles the most intractable problems of humanity: peace, justice, disarmament, human rights, racial equality, hunger, illiteracy, the environment, equality of the sexes, epidemics, drugs, violence, etc. As all heroes, it deserves at least some encouragement and love from the people.

Religion & Spirituality

~ Idea 3974 ~

My writing so many ideas and dreams begins to have some effect: in her magazine Humankind Advancing, Erika Erdmann, the assistant of Nobel Prize winner Roger Sperry, has opened a section of ideas and dreams inaugurating it with some of mine.

In Switzerland at the end of a conference on the United Nations and religions, the president of the conference had a box of little notebooks which he distributed to the audience, asking them to come up with ideas and dreams and to write them down, following my example. Several auditors asked for the floor immediately to tell their ideas.

May it become a world-wide movement of people participating in changing the world for the better. The benches of dreams are also making progress. After the conference a baker offered to donate ten such benches to the conference center and to the nearby convent of sisters.

My Testament to the UN
-A Contribution to the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations, 1995, Chapter 6

Arriving in Geneva, I was once received by a group of young people who drove me to my hotel. They asked me:
"How is it that you look so young and seem so enthusiastic and optimistic?"

My answer to them:
"It is because I work for the United Nations where I see that humans can succeed and work together. Like an artisan, I am happy because there is so much to do. If you want to feel like me, take an interest in the UN."

I give this advice to all young people of the world as well as to the elderly. I have observed that people working for UN associations and non-governmental organizations' get very old because they always have so much to do and they love it.

Holiday message 2005
From Barbara & Robert

Dear Readers of Good Morning World,

We are deeply grateful to all the readers of Good Morning World and send you our best wishes for the Holidays and a very Happy New Year.

Our wish. Our hope for world peace in 2006 is getting closer.

We are all contributing to the Earth becoming Paradise Earth. When we were created together with all the animals and we evolved into small groups in many places on the Earth, creating many languages, religions and many wars, that was not the bigger picture. It is only recently that we began to appreciate each other, to learn from each other and think seriously about becoming a world wide community with human rights for all a priority!

The European Union with 25 borderless countries is incredible when I think of the changes of nationality my family had to suffer in three European wars!

Humanity is now slowly but surely becoming one loving family thanks to each of you.

Good Morning World is helping us to communicate and to become Paradise on Earth.

Thank you for being a faithful reader and a blessed human.

Love, Robert and Barbara Muller
